Kink terms, explained plainly
Every term here gets a straight answer, the thing it commonly gets confused with, and the classes, groups and spaces near you where people actually do it. Nothing explicit, and no jargon used to explain jargon.
Leading
Terms for the person steering, tying, setting the pace or holding the structure.
Dominant
You like holding the plan, and you take the responsibility that comes with it seriously.
Rigger
You're drawn to rope as a craft, and you want to be genuinely good at it.
Sadist
Giving someone a hard time, with their enthusiastic agreement, is the appeal.
Brat Tamer
You enjoy the argument, and you enjoy winning it more.
Degrader
Words are your instrument, and you use them precisely.
Primal (Hunter)
You'd rather it were instinctive than choreographed.
Caregiver
Looking after someone properly is the part you'd keep if you could only keep one.
Master / Mistress
You want structure that holds when nobody's watching, not just during a scene.
Owner / Handler
You like the shape of caring for someone who takes an animal role.
Following
Terms for the person handing over control, being tied, or taking the sensation.
Submissive
You find room to breathe in trusting someone else to steer.
Rope Bunny
Being tied does something for you that very little else does.
Masochist
Intensity gets you somewhere that comfort doesn't.
Brat
You'd rather be caught than handed over, and the chase is most of the fun.
Degradee
Words that would sting anywhere else land differently when you asked for them.

Being chased switches something on that talking never does.

Commonly confused
What's the difference between a submissive and a masochist?
A submissive hands over control. A masochist enjoys pain. They're answers to two different questions, which is why plenty of people are one without being the other.
What's the difference between a brat and a submissive?
A brat is a submissive who resists on purpose, because being caught is more fun than going along with it. The resistance is the play.
What's the difference between a dominant and a sadist?
A dominant leads. A sadist enjoys causing sensation the other person asked for. One is about who's steering, the other about what's being done.
Is a rigger the same as a dominant?
No. A rigger ties. That's a craft, and it doesn't imply any authority at all.
What's the difference between degradation and masochism?
One is words, the other is sensation. A degradee wants language that would be unacceptable anywhere else; a masochist wants physical intensity.
Am I a switch or just new to this?
A switch moves between leading and following and keeps doing it. Someone new is still finding out which one fits, and may well settle.
Do you have to like pain to be a rope bunny?
No. Plenty of people who love being tied have no interest in pain at all, and a lot of rope is comfortable by design.
Is being a little the same as being submissive?
No, though they overlap often enough that people conflate them. Submission is about who holds authority. Little space is a headspace: playfulness, comfort, and handing over day-to-day responsibility rather than power.
What's the difference between primal play and dominance?
Dominance runs on instruction: someone says what happens and someone else follows. Primal play drops instruction entirely and runs on instinct, which is why it usually involves no titles, no protocol and very few words.
What's the difference between a Dominant and a Master?
Scope and duration. A dominant leads a scene or an encounter. A Master or Mistress holds authority that continues when the scene is over, and usually when nobody is watching.
What's the difference between pet play and being a little?
Both swap adult responsibility for something simpler, but for different things. A little takes a younger human headspace: comfort objects, bedtimes, being looked after. A pet takes an animal one: moving differently, communicating without words, being played with and trained.
Is degradation a kind of sadism?
They're separate. Sadism is about physical sensation; degradation is about language. One leaves marks, the other doesn't, and the two need completely different negotiation.
What's the difference between an exhibitionist and a voyeur?
One is watched, the other watches. In practice most people at a play party are doing some of both, and the two are what make public spaces work at all.
Is a brat a switch?
Usually not. A brat is typically on the following side and resists on purpose, because being caught is more fun than going along quietly. A switch genuinely moves between leading and following.
Is a caregiver the same as a dominant?
Not quite. Both lead, but a caregiver leads by nurturing: structure, routine, praise, comfort and being reliably present. Dominance can be all of those and can equally be none of them.
What if nothing on the test scored very high?
That's a real result and a common one. Roughly a fifth of people who take a test like this out of curiosity come out mostly vanilla, which just means ordinary rather than boring.
Is rope bondage supposed to hurt?
Not inherently. A lot of rope is comfortable, and a lot of rope work is closer to a craft project than anything painful.
What's the difference between a submissive and a slave?
Duration and scope, mostly. A submissive hands over control within agreed limits, often within particular scenes or areas of life. Someone in a Master/slave dynamic has handed over a structure that continues when nothing is happening.
Does taming a brat mean punishing them?
Only in the sense that both people find funny or hot. The point of brat play is the contest, not the consequence, and a tamer who treats it as genuine discipline has usually misread the game.
Can you want both praise and degradation?
Yes, and it's more common than either camp tends to admit. People contain both, and which one lands depends on the person, the mood and the day.
Is an Owner in pet play the same as a Master?
No, despite the overlapping vocabulary. Pet play's Owner or Handler is a role inside a specific kind of play: training, care, and an animal dynamic. Master or Mistress describes ongoing authority over a person's life.
Is primal prey the same as wanting to be hurt?
No. Prey is about being chased and caught, which is a pursuit dynamic rather than a pain one. The appeal people describe is the least cerebral thing they do.
