Tickling

Tickling as play, as torment or as fetish: one of the most common and least discussed interests, with a large community of its own.

Members say what they're into and what they're looking for on their card, in plain words. Browsing is free and needs no account; the faces are blurred until you join.

Tickling is a fetish for many more people than ever say so. The appeal, for the person being tickled, is helplessness and intensity without pain: the body reacts whether you want it to or not, which is the same mechanism as a lot of submission. For the tickler it is control and the pleasure of a reaction you can't fake. It often involves bondage, because the point is that you can't get away, and it has a large community (the tickling community predates most of the internet's kink spaces) with its own terminology: ler and lee for the two roles.

It overlaps with sensation play, with D/s, and with sadism and masochism in its lighter forms, but many people who are into tickling are into nothing else in the kink world and don't think of themselves as kinky. It is also one of the few interests that is funny to the people doing it, which is part of the appeal.

Because it looks harmless it is often done without negotiation, and it shouldn't be: being tickled past the point of fun is distressing, and the laughter makes it hard to tell. The same rules apply as anywhere.

Signs this is you

  • The idea of being unable to stop laughing while restrained is a charge, not a nightmare.
  • Or: you enjoy a reaction you can't fake, and tickling is the purest one.
  • You remember being tickled as a kid with a feeling that wasn't only annoyance.
  • You've searched for this and been surprised how much there is.

How people do it safely

Laughter hides distress: agree a signal other than words, because words don't come easily mid-tickle. Restraint plus tickling plus no stop signal is a bad combination. Breathing: give breaks. Some people are tickle-sensitive to the point of panic; find out gently.

Common questions

Is tickling really a fetish?

For many people, yes, and it has one of the oldest communities online. For many others it's play with no fetish attached. Both are fine.

What are ler and lee?

The tickling community's words for the tickler and the one being tickled.

Why does tickling need a safeword?

Because laughter hides distress and words are hard mid-tickle. A hand signal or a dropped object works.

A plain-language guide, not advice from a professional, and nothing here is better or worse than anything else. People are into several of these at once, and what fits changes over time.
