Pup play

Taking on the headspace of a dog: playful, present, wordless, often in a hood and with a handler. The fastest-growing corner of pet play.

Pup play is a form of pet play in which someone takes on the headspace and manner of a dog: moving on all fours or not, playing, being praised, scratched, told off, fetching. The gear (neoprene hoods, mitts, tails, harnesses) is distinctive and the community is large, young and unusually visible, with moshes (group play sessions), bars and social media presences in most big cities. It grew out of the leather scene and keeps some of its structure: handlers, packs, titles.

What people get from it, in their own words, is relief: pups describe the headspace as a holiday from language and responsibility, a way to be purely in the body and purely in the moment. Handlers describe the pleasure of care and command, and of being someone's safe person. It is often not sexual at all; many moshes are explicitly not.

It overlaps with pet play more broadly (kittens, ponies), with D/s (handler and pup is an owner dynamic), and with the gay leather scene it came from, though it is now broadly mixed.

Signs this is you

  • The idea of not having to talk, think or decide for a while is the appeal.
  • You like being praised, scratched and played with more than being desired.
  • Or: you like caring for, training and being responsible for someone.
  • You've seen hoods online and felt something other than confusion.

How people do it safely

Hoods restrict vision and hearing: a handler or a spotter at a mosh. Knees and wrists take a beating on all fours (pads). Agree what the pup can't do in headspace and what the handler never does. Moshes have rules and hosts; the community is friendly to newcomers who ask.

Common questions

Is pup play sexual?

Sometimes; often not. Many pups describe it as play and headspace, and many moshes are explicitly non-sexual. It is whatever the pup and handler agree it is.

Do I need a hood?

No. Plenty of pups never wear one. The hood helps some people drop into headspace and is part of the look, but a collar and the headspace are the essentials.

What is a mosh?

A group pup play session, often at a bar or a club night, with pups playing together and handlers watching. Most cities with a scene have them monthly; they are on the city pages.

A plain-language guide, not advice from a professional, and nothing here is better or worse than anything else. People are into several of these at once, and what fits changes over time.
